Packed attendance at the first Bevan Commission Masterclass: A Conversation with Professor Don Berwick
3rd Nov 2019
Personal stories, insightful discussions and shared expertise were the highlights of our first Bevan Masterclass: A Conversation with Professor Don Berwick.
The focus of the Masterclass was an exploration of how co-production can help to improve quality and transform prudent heath and care.
Professor Berwick, President Emeritus and Fellow of the Institute of Healthcare Improvement in the USA, shared his expertise, personal stories and thoughts around the need for more patient-centred care.
His main questions for the debate were ‘how often do we ask what’s the matter with you rather than what matters to you?’ and ‘how far can we really go to involve patients and families in their care and treatment?’
Professor Berwick said, “A system truly founded around co-production, around relationships, around what matters to you is going to be different from the one we have inherited.
“It’s a very exciting journey and we have to be focused on achieving the quadruple aim; better care for individuals, better health for populations, reduced cost and joy in work.
“The only route there is through relationship building, through the kind of attitude, respect and exchange that co-production brings.
“I predict that Wales, amongst many countries in the world, is one where the ground is very fertile for that kind of healthcare system.”
The Masterclass was the first in a series organised by the Bevan Commission, who are the leading health and care think tank in Wales.
The next one will be held in January 2020 and details were be revealed soon.
Bevan Commission Director Helen Howson said, “It was fantastic to see such a diverse audience from across all levels of health and care at this Masterclass.
“I’d like to thank everyone for not only giving up their Sunday afternoon but sharing their personal stories and insights about how we need to work together to co-produce and co-design our systems to ensure we meet the needs of our population.
“We are fortunate to be able to work so closely with our International Bevan Commissioner Professor Berwick and are grateful that he took the time to share his expertise with us again in Wales.”
