In the depths of grief at the loss of a great man, friend and most admired colleague that we mourn the death of Professor John Wyn Owen CB FRSPH FLSW who endured with tenacity, courage and resilience a long illness during which he continued to contribute in his usual full measure as a highly valued member of the Bevan Commission. He was also a Founding Fellow of the Learned Society of Wales in which he had held Council membership and treasurer of the Society. He brought wisdom, challenge, erudite knowledge and expertise to the Bevan Commission which fully exploited his long and distinguished career spanning population health, the academic domain and the civil service in the United Kingdom and Australia. Notably, in 1985 John was appointed as the first Director of the NHS in Wales. He championed Prudent Healthcare and was fastidious in promoting high quality delivery and patient safety in the National Health Services. His legacy will continue to drive forward the Bevan Commission’s commitment to ensuring that the National Health Service in Wales remains recognisable to its architect, Aneurin Bevan.
A Fuller Obituary will follow.
