Professor Gregor Coster

Professor Gregor Coster is Professor of Health Policy and founding Dean of the Wellington Faculty of Health at Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand. He is an Emeritus Professor of The University of Auckland where he was the Elaine Gurr Professor of General Practice.  He is past Chair of District Health Boards New Zealand.  He is a Distinguished Fellow of the Royal New Zealand College of General Practitioners and served as Chairman from 1995-1997.

He is a Chartered Fellow of the Institute of Directors in New Zealand.

He was the founding Chair of WorkSafe New Zealand, the national health and safety regulator and a Board Member of the Accident Compensation Corporation. Formerly he was Chairman of the Counties Manukau and West Coast District Health Boards and Deputy Chairman of the Pharmaceutical Management Agency (PHARMAC) and Health Workforce New Zealand.

He chaired the Independent Assurance Review of the National Bowel Screening Programme in 2018 to provide the Minister of Health with assurance regarding the readiness and effectiveness of the national screening programme.

Professor Gregor Coster was made a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List in 2007 for services to public health.
